Last-Minute Halloween Tech for a Ghoulish Display

Halloween projections cover a house with a glowing eyeball, skeleton and jack-o’-lantern faces.

Halloween is almost here. The candy is ready, but the house still looks like it does every other night. A few pieces of Halloween tech can change the mood.

We’d start with one window or wall people can actually see. Add colored light, a moving pattern and a quiet sound effect, then build the rest of the display around that focal point.

Set the Halloween mood with color-changing bulbs

Purple behind the curtain. Orange on a pumpkin. Green spilling across a skeleton. Our starting point is a simple color change, using smart bulbs in compatible indoor lamps.

The WiZ color bulbs in our Amazon picks come as a two-pack. Use them to give two parts of the scene different colors, rather than washing everything in the same light. Existing colored lights can do the job too.

Project Halloween patterns onto a wall

A decoration projector adds moving patterns to a suitable surface. The Govee Outdoor Decoration Projector Light in our list is an option for that effect.

Check the effect you want before buying: decorative patterns and a ghost walking across a window are different jobs. Downloaded animation needs a compatible video projector or screen and a player that supports the file. A pattern projector should not be assumed to play your own videos.

For sound, an existing Bluetooth speaker can add a quiet creak or a little wind from a recording you have permission to use. Let visitors discover the effect without drowning out the conversation at the door.

Schedule indoor Halloween lights

The Tapo P125M smart plugs in our list can schedule compatible indoor plug-in lighting. They are indoor plugs, so keep them inside.

If you are using WiZ smart bulbs, their own app can handle scheduling while the bulbs stay powered. Use a smart plug for ordinary compatible lamps or decorations that need one. Test the start and finish before Halloween night, and use a projector’s normal shutdown controls.
